the Art of Storytelling

Second Story is a network of design studios that focuses on responsive environments, story-driven experiences, experimentation, and innovation. For more than 20 years, we have conceptualized, designed, and developed projects that educate, immerse, and activate across the cultural and brand space.

Communication Arts Interactive

Our streak of good luck continues: Fusion, our most recent collaboration with Electrosonic, has won a Communication Arts Interactive Award! Look for a writeup about our work in the March/April issue of CA.

HOW & Interaction Awards

We’re the elated recipients of five HOW International Design Awards this year for our work with The Museum of Modern Art, the Goat Farm Arts Center, Whole Foods Market, Vornado Realty Trust, and the Denver Botanic Gardens. As if that weren’t enough, #Trashtag and Who, Like Me, Is Threatened? both made the Interaction Awards shortlist in their respective categories.

We are excited to be included in ‘’Digital Dialogues,” a quarterly event series put on by AIGA Portland and SEGD Portland. Creative Mornings

3% Conference

Women influence 80% of consumer spending, yet only a small percentage of Creative Directors are female. The 3% Conference seeks to change the leadership landscape by building community among female creatives and teaching men and women in the industry how to address issues of gender inequality in new ways. We’re thrilled that Executive Creative Director Keri Elmsly will represent Second Story alongside SapientNitro’s Donald Chesnut at this year’s conference on October 26th in New York.

Future of Storytelling

Future of StoryTelling

We were honored to participate in this year’s Future of StoryTelling summit, an invitation-only gathering of technology, media, and communications visionaries from around the world. Working with Academy Award–winner Roger Ross Williams, our Yasmin Elayat co-led a workshop using the transmedia project Traveling While Black—which explores restricted movement in our society, past and present—to experiment with new ways of provoking dialogue, changing perspectives, and finding common ground.

ACUI Conference

At the ACUI Conference at Oregon State University on October 9th, Lead Integration Engineer Matt Arnold will co-present our recent work for Gonzaga University’s new Hemmingson Center alongside our partners from Opsis Architecture. Stay tuned to our website for a video demonstration of the installations we created to reflect and enhance the student experience.

Free Zone

Best of ATL Block Party

Reuniting with the Goat Farm Arts Center, our collaborators on #Trashtag, we’ve taken an imaginative approach to environmental signage for Creative Loafing’s Best of Atlanta Block Party. Free Zone raises questions about the future of technology-driven societies and the human costs of technological evolution. Read more about the project here, and check out the installation in person on Friday, September 25th from 6-11 PM.

With its focus on the art of interactivity, the INSTINT conference in Minneapolis has been a great source of inspiration for us over the years. This time around, ECD Keri Elmsly will do some inspiring herself as a featured speaker. She will present on the landscape of risk and reward in making Speculative Architecture a reality and how love and trust are fundamental in professional practice.

Creative Mornings

Executive Creative Director Keri Elmsly shared her thoughts on empathy as part of the always enjoyable Creative Mornings Portland series. Video of the presentation is now available on their website.

Tickets are free, and a few are still available!

1100 SE Division Map

We’ve taken over a vacant storefront at 1100 SE Division St. in Portland with our latest lab experiment, LANDSCAPES. The sculpture integrates responsive technology, robotics, LED lighting, and simple origami forms to create a meditative experience exploring the nature of change. We invite everyone to consider the landscape around them and share their observations on our Instagram account: pdxlandscapes. Tag #pdxlandscapes with your photos.

ArtClix 2015

ArtClix 2015

We recently launched an update to the award-winning ArtClix app we designed and developed for Atlanta’s High Museum of Art in 2011. To provide visitors with new opportunities to connect with and respond to the museum’s collection, we added video capabilities and enhanced the comments section to include the first ever museum-commissioned emojis.
