the Art of Storytelling
Second Story is a network of design studios focusing on responsive environments, story-driven experiences, and experience innovation. For more than 20 years, we have conceptualized, designed, and developed projects that educate, immerse, and activate across the cultural and brand space.
Who We Are
UX Magazine Awards
Unconscious Bias Workshop
Access and inclusion are crucial to creating both impactful work and a successful workplace. In collaboration with SapientNitro, we’ve been working to make some room for diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and ideas to ensure that under-represented voices are being heard. Tomorrow, Studio Director Emily Fridman is heading to the 4A’s Talent@2030 conference to talk about our most recent effort in this arena: an experiential unconscious bias workshop.
SXSW Panel Picker
We’re always looking to connect with the broader creative community, and South by Southwest is one of the best venues for sharing ideas. We have two sessions up for public vote and would love your help in getting them accepted into next year’s festival. The voting process is quick and easy: click here to create a Panel Picker account, then go to our talks on Emotional Architecture and Hacking Architecture. Click on the top left “thumbs up” for both, if they sound like something you’d like to see at SXSW.
Art Lab at the High
Now through September 11th, we’re re-teaming with Atlanta’s High Museum to prototype the future of family learning in the arts. Check out our work in their Art Lab, an interactive educational space where children and adults can discover, play, create, and imagine together.
For the second year in a row, Creative Director Chris Cobb will serve on the MMA Smarties jury. Alongside luminaries from some of the biggest global brands and agencies, he’ll judge the best mobile marketing campaigns from around the world.
Senior Producer Martha Almy is heading to DC on August 18th to discuss balancing physical and digital in the museum world. She’ll be part of an exciting lineup at “From Museums to Beyond: Experiences Everywhere,” an SEGD Exhibition and Experience Design workshop.
We were honored to be part of the Cannes Lions Festival this year, collaborating with SapientNitro and PRETTYBIRD on a main stage session focused on diversity. Through the personal experiences of four boundary-breaking visionaries, “Make Some Room” explored how access and inclusion can help transform creativity. Most importantly, the event sought to inspire attendees to make changes in their own workplaces by opening the door to more perspectives, more voices, and more ideas. Executive Creative Director Keri Elmsly also had the pleasure of serving on the 2016 Design Lions jury, judging the best design work from around the world.
SEGD Global Design Awards
Two recent projects we were involved in were recognized by the 2016 SEGD Global Design Awards! Revolution in the Landscape: Re-Experience the Halprin Fountains, which included our Lovejoy Fountain Activation, received a Merit Award in the Intersection of Design and Public Engagement category, while CCHR received a Merit Award in the Exhibition category.
Custer State Park
We learned so much from our recent collaboration with Custer State Park. We explored the stunning landscapes of South Dakota. We found out how to peacefully coexist with bison. We even uncovered new insights into our own creative process. Check out this Adweek article for more information about the project and make sure to visit our blog to read Story Director David Waingarten’s thoughts on using technology to connect people to place.
AAM MUSE Award
The American Alliance of Museums annual meeting started off the best way imaginable for us: with a gold Media & Technology MUSE Award for Common Threads! We accepted the honors alongside our client from the The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum, a perfect coda to a great collaboration.
We’ve spent the past year working closely with the team at SFMOMA on the new Photography Interpretive Gallery, a warm, welcoming space where visitors discover the history of the medium through three interactive digital exhibits. The gallery, designed by Second Story, provides museum-goers with a place to both relax and explore, offering installations that consider the role pictures have played in shaping the mythology of California, present a first-person look at the creative processes of prominent photographers, and challenge visitors to represent themselves using only the contents of their pockets.
We received Platinum: Best in Category recognition in the Creativity Media & Interactive Design Awards for our work for Nokia Technologies, Gonzaga University, and The Textile Museum! Quite a way to kick off the week!
Experiential Marketing Summit
Today at the Experiential Marketing Summit in Denver, Creative Director Joel Krieger joins Craig Lovin, creative director at World of Coca-Cola, to discuss finding patterns in human interaction and designing moving experiences around them.
The Communicator Awards gave us much to celebrate this year: six Gold Awards of Excellence and three Silver Awards of Distinction! The winning work spans a variety of media types, a true testament to the breadth of our skills across all three studio geographies.
Student tours are always a treat, and yesterday’s was no exception. We were delighted to welcome a group of high schoolers from Atlanta’s The New School to meet our team and visit our lab.
Help us push boundaries, innovate, and redefine the world of interactive storytelling. If you want to make an impact and challenge yourself, join our team. We are driven by design, technology, and the magic moment when concepts come to life.
We enjoy working with people from diverse and eclectic backgrounds from the visual arts, engineering, film, liberal arts, and humanities. The formula is simple: combine a shared love for storytelling, technology, and a desire to make great things.
Send your information to email@example.com, show us your work, and let us know why you want to be part of our team.
We are always looking to collaborate with new people to enliven our studios and bring new perspectives to our work. Our active internship program focuses on training, collaborative two-way learning, and providing real-world experience.
Please send an introduction, your resume, and a link to your work to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Second Story has received over 400 awards and accolades in competitions, festivals, and events, and our work has been featured in many books, magazines, and articles in both the trade and popular press.

Two of our projects were inducted into the Smithsonian’s Permanent Research Collections in 1999 and 2003, and several Web sites have been featured and awarded in the SXSW and Sundance Festivals. We were recognized in 2004 at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and at the White House for our decade of work as part of the National Design Awards. The studio was the subject of a feature story in the New York Times in 2006, and was profiled in a creative inspiration video series by lynda.com in 2011.
