Who We Are
Creative Director Daniel Meyers, AIA and Experience Design Director Traci Sym will lecture at the College of Art and Architecture at the University of Idaho on Thursday, October 16th. The lecture will focus on the emerging and merging disciplines of Experience Design and Architecture, on the theoretical and practical realities of integrated practices, and on the works that are coming from this new paradigm.
Design Week Portland
Design Week Portland is right around the corner, and we’re very excited to celebrate our city’s creative spirit alongside our peers in the industry. On Tuesday, October 7th from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM, check out our interactive art installation at Lovejoy Fountain as part of SEGD Portland’s “Revolution in the Landscape.” The next day, we’ll open our studio doors from 4 PM - 7 PM, inviting the public in to see our space, meet our team, and play with the toys in our media lab. Join us!
Open Hardware Summit
Yasmin Elayat, Technical Director in our New York studio and the newest addition to our team, will speak at the 2014 Open Hardware Summit in Rome on September 30th. Her talk will focus on how technology can be used to break the boundaries of storytelling, enabling audiences to become co-creators, not just spectators.
Portland Mini Maker Faire
The Portland Mini Maker Faire is coming soon, and we can’t wait to see what our fellow tinkerers dream up. Pay a visit to our booth Saturday, September 13th and Sunday, September 14th between 10 AM and 5 PM, where members of our team will show you how to Construct-a-Comic!
Lead Integration Engineer Matt Arnold is Toronto-bound September 17th to present at DSrupted 2014. Focusing on our responsive environments work, Matt will speak about engaging audiences using narrative spaces.

World of Coca-Cola Explorer
Our latest collaboration with The Coca-Cola Company recently went live! The context-aware Explorer mobile app is designed to complement a visit to the World of Coca-Cola, leveraging iBeacon technology for maximum engagement, shareability, and fun. Our project page has all the details.
The National Center for Civil and Human Rights opened today in Atlanta! Collaborating with our clients and partners, we designed and developed a series of interactive experiences that invite visitors deeper into the struggle for equality, opportunity, and fair treatment in the U.S. and around the world. A stunning space full of rich, diverse content, the museum is an important addition to Atlanta’s cultural landscape. We’re proud to be a part of it!
June is shaping up to be a busy month for our team, with a couple of notable speaking engagements right around the corner. On Thursday, June 26th, Web Technology Lead David Brewer will present at Open Source Bridge, where he’ll demonstrate how to use xmonad, a tiling window manager, to bend your desktop to your will. The very next day, as part of the Association for Community Excellence‘s 2014 conference, Creative Director David Waingarten and Experience Designer Kirsten Southwell will talk about their work on the Emerging Issues Commons and lead a workshop to help participants brainstorm their own educational and community-based interactive projects.
Portfolio Night 12
Chris Cobb, Creative Director at our New York studio, is participating in Portfolio Night 12, a terrific opportunity for young copywriters, art directors, and designers to spend a little time meeting with and learning from seasoned professionals. Chris will be in esteemed company, with representatives from many other creative agencies also expected to attend.
Gold Creativity Award
Spring has sprung in our hometown, and a series of great speaking opportunities have cropped up right in our own backyard. First, on May 8th, our team will celebrate digital creativity with a demonstration of the Lyt prototype at the launch of Oregon Story Board‘s experimental work space at OMSI. The next day, Creative Director David Waingarten will discuss storytelling with transmedia at the Portland Documentary Summit. And on May 15th, Senior Experience Designer Norman Lau will participate in the Oregon Animation Industry Showcase at the Hollywood Theatre as part of the Northwest Animation Festival.

Second Story has received over 400 awards and accolades in competitions, festivals, and events, and our work has been featured in many books, magazines, and articles in both the trade and popular press.

Two of our projects were inducted into the Smithsonian’s Permanent Research Collections in 1999 and 2003, and several Web sites have been featured and awarded in the SXSW and Sundance Festivals. We were recognized in 2004 at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and at the White House for our decade of work as part of the National Design Awards. The studio was the subject of a feature story in the New York Times in 2006, and was profiled in a creative inspiration video series by lynda.com in 2011.
