Photography Interpretive Center

SFMOMA Collaboration

We’ve spent the past year working closely with the team at SFMOMA on the new Photography Interpretive Gallery, a warm, welcoming space where visitors discover the history of the medium through three interactive digital exhibits. The gallery, designed by Second Story, provides museum-goers with a place to both relax and explore, offering installations that consider the role pictures have played in shaping the mythology of California, offer a first-person look at the creative processes of prominent photographers, and challenge visitors to represent themselves using only the contents of their pockets. We received Platinum: Best in Category recognition in the Creativity Media & Interactive Design Awards for our work for Nokia Technologies, Gonzaga University, and The Textile Museum! Quite a way to kick off the week!

The Communicator Awards gave us much to celebrate this year: six Gold Awards of Excellence and three Silver Awards of Distinction! The winning work spans a variety of media types, a true testament to the breadth of our skills across all three studio geographies.

Design Week Portland

Design Week Portland

Design Week Portland is in full swing, and we’ve had a blast so far. First, Creative Director Kelsey Snook participated in a Digital Storytelling panel on Monday, April 18th. Alongside other interactive creators, she explored the expanding landscape’s trends, tools, and platforms. The next day, we threw open our doors for our annual Open House. More than 125 people popped by to hang out with our team, talk shop, and play with our toys.

Senior Interactive Developer Chris Carlson is headed to Charlottesville this week to speak to UVA music students about his Borderlands Granular iPad app, life as a creative coder, and his work with Second Story.

Learning to See

Pixel Awards

Learning to See has won a Pixel Award! We’re thrilled to see our exhibit for the Denver Botanic Gardens stand out in the highly competitive Arts & Installations category. Also nominated this year: our wall installations for Gonzaga University, and the Object:Photo website for The Museum of Modern Art.



The 2016 DSE APEX Awards were good to us. We won Gold for both the Hemmingson Center Interactives and the Times Square 4K Screen Launch, with the latter also receiving Installation of the Year honors!

National Student Show

National Student Show & Conference

The National Student Show & Conference offers young designers, writers, and artists the chance to learn from, network with, and be inspired by professional creatives. Among those participating this year: Story Director David Waingarten, who will deliver the conference’s opening keynote address.

The Whole Foods location in Alpharetta, GA, home to the interactive installations we designed and developed, has been named one of Planet Retail’s Stores of the Year!

Digital Signage Expo

Lead Integration Engineer Matt Arnold is heading to Vegas to speak at this year’s Digital Signage Expo. In a seminar on Wednesday, March 16th, he’ll discuss the keys to blending technology and environment to create seamless experiences.
