AIGA ATL Buzz
Our Atlanta studio is hosting the next AIGA ATL Open Studio Happy Hour on May 28th from 7 PM - 9 PM. Pop in to meet our team, tour our space, and spend some time with the local creative community.
Atlanta Portfolio Night
On May 20th, Creative Director Joel Krieger and Associate Creative Director Pavani Yalla will review work as part of Atlanta’s ADC Portfolio Night 13. The event presents a terrific opportunity for aspiring creatives to learn from industry professionals.
2015 has been a big year for awards so far, and we’re ecstatic to keep adding to our mantel! First, the Times Square 4K Screen Launch project received a One Show Merit Award in the new Responsive Environments category. Then, the Communicator Awards recognized 100 Years of Design with two Gold Awards of Excellence, while My Coke Art and our work for the Center for Civil and Human Rights each received one, and Learning to See and our contributions to the National Civil Rights Museum were both celebrated with Silver Awards of Distinction. Finally, our work for Whole Foods – a nominee for a FAB Award – received Platinum/Best in Show in the Creativity International Media & Interactive Design Awards. Object:Photo received the same honors, while the Times Square 4K Screen Launch project won Gold.
Digital Signage Awards
Two exciting updates on one of our most interesting recent projects: Global Crossroads for Occidental College has won a Digital Signage Award in the Education category and a gold DSE Apex Content Award in the Education & Healthcare category!
TFI Interactive Day
At the Tribeca Film Institute Interactive Day over the weekend, we invited the audience into our Here to There experiment. Using mobile beacons, choreographed movement, and a narrative from TFIi keynote speaker Lucy McRae, the experience explored how presence, physical space, and human intervention work with wearable technology to tell a story. HOW International Design Awards
Stop-Motion Studio has received Outstanding Achievement recognition in the Kiosks/Interactive Exhibits category of the HOW International Design Awards! Look for the project in this month’s issue of HOW Magazine.
WEBpick of the Week
We couldn’t be happier to announce that 100 Years of Design has won a SXSW Interactive Innovation Award in the Responsive Design category! The competition was fierce this year, and we’re thrilled to see this rich site continue to receive recognition. Make sure to visit celebratedesign.org to share what design means to you.
Diode Gallery Installation
We recently transformed a street-level display window at Portland’s Diode Gallery into an interactive canvas. The installation, which influences the face of the street and activates pedestrians in an unexpected way, will be up until April 1st.
Members of our Portland and New York Experience Design teams are headed to North Carolina on March 23rd to run a workshop at NCSU. Kirsten Southwell and Justin Berg will work with graphic design students to help them reimagine functional, tool-based experiences as story-based experiences in physical space.
PWA Career Day
We were delighted to once again take part in Portland Workforce Alliance‘s Career Day. The organization fosters relationships between local businesses and Portland’s public schools, and we’ve worked with them over the past few years to share with current students a bit about ourselves and our work. Hearing from designers, developers, producers, and creative directors, the high-schoolers learned about the diverse paths that led members of our team to Second Story. We hope we inspired them as much as they inspired us.
The Future of Design for Listening
On February 26th at Soho House, Mara Gerstein, Studio Director at our New York lab, will be part of an intimate panel discussion focused on how to design for listening experiences.
White House Holiday Tour Experience
In collaboration with the National Endowment for the Arts, Second Story has created an interactive snowscape for the White House’s holiday decorations to be featured on the Holiday Tour. This year’s theme of “A Children’s Winter Wonderland” combined with the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative inspired the project that will be on display through the holiday season. The installation is the first of its kind in the White House and exemplifies the administration’s commitment to technology, American innovation and design – sometimes referred to as STEAM, something we here at Second Story are passionate about. Times Square 4K Screen Launch
Our largest scale project to date debuted last night in Times Square: a transmedia exhibition commemorating the launch of the world’s largest 4K display! Built by Vornado Realty Trust, the screen boasts 23 million pixels, creating a spectacular stage for the interactive generative-graphic takeover we produced in collaboration with artists Universal Everything. Two of our projects were inducted into the Smithsonian’s Permanent Research Collections in 1999 and 2003, and several Web sites have been featured and awarded in the SXSW and Sundance Festivals. We were recognized in 2004 at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and at the White House for our decade of work as part of the National Design Awards. The studio was the subject of a feature story in the New York Times in 2006, and was profiled in a creative inspiration video series by lynda.com in 2011.
