the Art of Storytelling
Second Story is a network of design studios that focuses on responsive environments, story-driven experiences, experimentation, and innovation. For more than 20 years, we have conceptualized, designed, and developed projects that educate, immerse, and activate across the cultural and brand space.
Who We Are
Three very different projects have been nominated for Pixel Awards: an exhibit, a pair of wall installations, and a website! Check out our entries in the Arts & Culture and Installations & Activations categories.

We’re always looking for creative ways to enhance the digital signage experience. Read our Matt Arnold’s thoughts on the future of the industry here.

HOW International Design Awards
We’re the elated recipients of five HOW International Design Awards this year for our work with The Museum of Modern Art, the Goat Farm Arts Center, Whole Foods Market, Vornado Realty Trust, and the Denver Botanic Gardens.
Libbie Mill Library
We recently collaborated with the Libbie Mill Library in Henrico County, VA, on an immersive installation that brings the area’s rich history to life. Read all about the beautiful new space here.
We are excited to be included in ‘’Digital Dialogues,” a quarterly event series put on by AIGA Portland and SEGD Portland. On Thursday, November 5th, Senior Producer Martha Almy and Senior Experience Designer Laura Allcorn will discuss the exhibition concept work we’ve recently completed for the Angel Island US Immigration Station Hospital in the San Francisco Bay. Tickets are available here.
Independent Lodging Congress
On Thursday, October 22nd, Creative Director Chris Cobb will speak on a panel at the Independent Lodging Congress exploring the challenges and opportunities the resurgence of the sharing economy has brought to the hospitality industry.
Women influence 80% of consumer spending, yet only a small percentage of Creative Directors are female. The 3% Conference seeks to change the leadership landscape by building community among female creatives and teaching men and women in the industry how to address issues of gender inequality in new ways. We’re thrilled that Executive Creative Director Keri Elmsly will represent Second Story alongside SapientNitro’s Donald Chesnut at this year’s conference on October 26th in New York.
Future of StoryTelling
We were honored to participate in this year’s Future of StoryTelling summit, an invitation-only gathering of technology, media, and communications visionaries from around the world. Working with Academy Award–winner Roger Ross Williams, our Yasmin Elayat co-led a workshop using the transmedia project Traveling While Black—which explores restricted movement in our society, past and present—to experiment with new ways of provoking dialogue, changing perspectives, and finding common ground.
At the ACUI Conference at Oregon State University on October 9th, Lead Integration Engineer Matt Arnold will co-present our recent work for Gonzaga University’s new Hemmingson Center alongside our partners from Opsis Architecture. Stay tuned to our website for a video demonstration of the installations we created to reflect and enhance the student experience.
Best of ATL Block Party
Reuniting with the Goat Farm Arts Center, our collaborators on #Trashtag, we’ve taken an imaginative approach to environmental signage for Creative Loafing’s Best of Atlanta Block Party. Free Zone raises questions about the future of technology-driven societies and the human costs of technological evolution. Read more about the project here, and check out the installation in person on Friday, September 25th from 6-11 PM.
With its focus on the art of interactivity, the INSTINT conference in Minneapolis has been a great source of inspiration for us over the years. This time around, ECD Keri Elmsly will do some inspiring herself as a featured speaker. She will present on the landscape of risk and reward in making Speculative Architecture a reality and how love and trust are fundamental in professional practice.
Executive Creative Director Keri Elmsly shared her thoughts on empathy as part of the always enjoyable Creative Mornings Portland series. Video of the presentation is now available on their website.
