The art of quilting is revealed as visitors create their own digital quilts in a fun, five-step process.

This powerful interface explores the intricacies of how quilts are made in five activities. Visitors can design their own unique digital quilts, which can then be emailed or posted in an online gallery. As each step is explained there are links to learn more, links to inspiring examples from the collection, and a toolbox for creative exploration of quilting practices. Visitors select patterns, make variations on them, select fabrics and lay them out, then add borders and topstitching. The variety and amount of contributions continues to grow and inspire both quilting aficionados and newcomers alike in an entertaining gallery of digital quilts.

    Press & Awards

American Association of Museums Muse Awards, Bronze, Online Presence, 2009

The Quilt Explorer encourages exploration with a delightful focus on engaging storytelling through lo-res video with a appropriate community feel, and an interesting approach to allowing users to compare, comment and share.

“International Quilt Studies Center Opens Its Doors Sunday,” News Net Nebraska, Kristin Limoges, Liz Stinson, and Emily Ingram, April 23, 2008

The building is an interactive center where touch screen computers can show visitors quilting timelines for more information about textiles and quilting. Visitors can also design their own quilts digitally or curate their own exhibitions. When visitors are done creating their masterpieces, their work will be left on the server indefinitely and accessible online at any time.
