    Visitors use physical wands to “bookmark” artwork in the Peabody Essex Museum in order to rediscover it online and curate, organize, and share these personal collections.

    On special wands that also provide audio tours, visitors can enter the unique number printed on every interpretive panel for every artwork on view. At ARTscape kiosks deployed throughout the galleries, visitors can dock their wand and revisit the breadcrumb trail of bookmarks they collected. There is additional information for every item, as well as a powerful database that helps visitors find related items on view or in storage. Visitors can send the bookmarks home via email, where visitors can relive the museum experience online. Bookmarks can be saved according to the dates of visits, or they can be organized into other sets and shared with others.

    ARTscape takes the collections’ accessibility to new heights with an intuitive interface that suggests relationships between objects and ideas. Visitors can find connections to other artwork based on shared creators, origins, provenance, medium, descriptions, or collections. An extensive keyword system applied to all content incorporates both concrete and abstract criteria, applying a “fuzzy logic” approach to suggesting connections between concepts. Rather than generating a limited set of search results, such as those typically made through static, linked databases, ARTscape helps forge experiences as unique and personalized as each individual’s imagination.
