For over a decade Second Story designed and developed some of the most innovative interactive media experiences online for the National Geographic Society on diverse subject matters spanning the breadth and depth of the Society. In the first feature for National Geographic, users can follow a group of rafters down the Selway River to learn the ins and out of river navigation. One feature compares John Smith’s Chesapeake Bay with the bay today, while another follows Lewis and Clark on their “journey of discovery” across the nation. Volvo Ocean Race keeps visitors up-to-date on a grueling nine-month sailboat race, and Forces of Nature reveals the science behind the earth’s most violent natural events. With timelines and navigable maps, visitors to Pearl Harbor get unparalleled context for understanding the U.S. entrance into World War II. Xpeditions transforms the National Geography Standards into an immersive exploratory experience through a 3D world. A life-size king cobra is the subject and navigation device for one Web feature where visitors go on a tongue-to-tail tour of cobra facts and fiction. Another site transmitted the daily activities of teams in New Zealand searching for the giant squid. A navigable online forest challenges young visitors to discover the habitats of eastern woodland animals.
